Joel Morris Dance Academy -
Shanklin, Isle of Wight

Based in the beautiful old village of Shanklin, Joel Morris Dance Academy was established in 2020. The school was previously the very successful Gillian Cartwight School of Dance. 

 

The school offers the Royal Academy of Dance examinations. We also offer The Royal Ballet Schools Affiliate Training and Assessment program, of which we are currently the only school on the Isle of Wight to offer this. For modern and tap we offer I.S.T.D exams. 

 

We have had tremendous success at competitions which include The Dance World Cup finals, The all England Finals and won many awards for the most 1st and 2nd places. Many of our students are going on to train full time this year some with scholarships for exceptional talent. 

 

Joel is very proud and excited to see the Adult Dance program growing at Joel Morris Dance Academy.  

 

After over 20 years of performing and teaching internationally Joel brings the best of his experiences to JMDA. His goal as a teacher first and foremost is to inspire! The environment here at JMDA is friendly, passionate and disciplined.

Joel Morris Dance Academy Owner and Principal

Joel Morris

Joel Morris PDTD RAD dip RTS ATAP Trained on full scholarship at the Central School of Ballet London. He was awarded full scholarships to The Royal Danish Ballet, Copenhagen and American Ballet Theatre in New York City. Joel has had an unusually long professional performing career and in this time he has performed at all of Londons top theatres; The Royal Festival Hall, The London palladium, The Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Opera House and across the world (Japan, Australia, Korea, USA, South Africa, Denmark, Italy, Isreal, Monaco, Turkey, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, Greece) in Principal and Soloist roles. Working with London City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, K-Ballet (Japan) English National Ballet, South African Ballet Theatre and Cape Town City Ballet to name a few. Having danced all the Classical Ballets; Swan Lake, nutcracker and more, he was lucky enough to work with Dame Gillian Lynne, Andrew Lloyd~Webber and Trevor Nun in the West End revival of CATS at The London Palladium and the world tour where he performed the iconic Role of Mr Mistoffelees. Whist performing Joel staged many youth ballet full productions in South Africa and and taught in the school attached to the company he was performing in. This is where his passion for teaching was really developed. After completing the Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma Joel has taught at The Royal ballet School (International Summer Intensive at White Lodge and the associate programs for the last 6 years) The Urdang Academy (specialism in classical ballet) BodyWork, London Studio Centre, Ballet Boost, the RAD (London and international summer programs) Pineapple Studios Covent Garden, The Ballet School Notting Hill. Teaching the professionals of “American in Paris” West End cast, The South African Ballet Theatre Company and open professional class at Danceworks and Pineapple. He feels lucky to have taught every level of ballet. Joel Is delighted to be back home on the beautiful Isle of Wight and teaching the wonderful students of JMDA completing a full circle.

Tap, Modern & Jazz 

Suzy Morris

Suzy grew up on the Island and started her training with Hilary Hall. As a youngster she took all her major ISTD exams, competed on and off the Island in many major dance festivals, and enjoyed performing in many productions at Shanklin Theatre. At age 16 she gained a place at the prestigious Laine Theatre Arts where she professionally trained for 3 years, graduating with her ISTD teaching qualifications in Modern and Tap Dance and Musical Theatre Diploma. For the following 10 years Suzy performed professionally in theatre and commercial dance touring the world. Dance Credits include 42nd Street (European premier - Stuttgart, choreographed by Randy Skinner), H’Penny Bridge (The Point Arena Dublin, choreographed by Bill Deamer), Carnival Cruise Lines (M/S Paradise - US, choreographed by Kerry Stables). Suzy danced in many hair and fashion shows across London, CSE Tours - live entertainment to the British Armed Forces around the world and appeared in many live music gigs, events and videos. Suzy then turned her focus to teaching and choreography. She has taught at many dance school across London including The Royal Academy of Dance Headquarters in Battersea. In 2008 Suzy moved to Perth, WA, Australia and taught at the Principal Academy of Dance for 5 years, teaching full time professional students working towards their Advanced Diploma. Suzy has a passion for choreography and has choreographed some major Hair Shows in the UK including Goldwell, L’Oreal and Saks. She has worked on many live events as Artistic Director for TSE Productions and helped create and launch 2 brand new production shows on board 2 European Cruise Lines. Suzy is so happy to be back on the Island and delighted to be sharing her knowledge and passion along side her wonderful colleagues at the JMDA.

Modern, Lyrical and Commercial

Joe Alabaster

Joe graduated from Stella Mann College of Performing Arts in 2013. Upon graduating he worked extensively for Beau Productions, performing at some of London’s most prestigious venues, including The Dorchester Hotel and Cafe de Paris. Since then he has worked on various cruise lines as Dance Captain and Company Performance Manager. Joe is now based back home on the Isle of Wight and works professionally for Spotlight IOW as a performer, dance tutor and choreographer. Joe joined the team at Joel Morris Dance Academy back in 2017 working under the direction of both Gillian and Joel. Joe teaches Modern, Lyrical and Commercial for the school and has created numerous pieces for shows as well as award winning competition festival entries. “Allow your passion to become you purpose and one day it will become your profession”
